Lxs Primxs

Quienes somos:

Mariadela Belle Alvarez and Carl(os) Roa are the performance artists that make up Lxs Primxs. Honduran and Colombian in spirit, estranged and yearning in mind, Lxs Primxs creates work that speaks to a third culture following.

With Belle's dance training and Carl(os)' theatre background, they complete each other and form a chromatic mezcla of collective embodiment, rooted in an understanding of the tension between assimilation and preservation. The two saw themselves in each other's work and soon identified each other as artist primxs.

Lxs Primxs was conceived in 2017 when Carl(os) and Belle met through the process and productions of Andean Mountains (Roa) and Ageless Dream: Historias Nuestras (Alvarez).

Past Presentations:

  • Spanish For Estranged Latin Kids — Circle of Hope, April 2019

  • Residence for Emerging Artists in Performance (REAP) — Leah Stein Dance Company, July 2018

Ageless Dream: Historias Nuestras

Developed as part of the BrideNext residency, this project focuses on advocacy and selfhood for American immigrants. The performance threads together memories of home, journeys across national borders, and questions around the American crisis of immigration. We partnered with migrant and ally communities through Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture, Aquinas Center, and New Sanctuary Movement in the research and process of this work.

“The [performers] are able griots, squeezing corporeal meaning out of the spoken word. Fierce, precise performers, they are unafraid to reveal the multifaceted nature of the human condition. They travel, rest, encourage, and comfort one another while moving in the space with assisted air-borne phrases, intricate floorwork, and moments of individual exclamations of strength and anger, frailness and gratitude, joy.”

— Rhonda Moore, ThINKingDANCE
